Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park River Adventure
This was one of the first rides we did, and it set the tone for the entire visit.
The combination of animatronics, atmosphere, and that sneaky big drop at the end kept all of us grinning (and maybe a little screaming). The kids were surprised (and I was too, honestly, even though I was expecting it!) at how long and sharp the final plunge was.
Thankfully, we didn’t get too wet, which made it a perfect start for the rest of our time. If I were you, I’d plan to get very wet, though. Not everyone on our ride was so lucky.
There are driers you can stand in to get the water off you afterwards, but you’ll pay to use them.
Raptor Encounter
We lined up for the raptor meet-and-greet and were blown away by how realistic it felt.
The actors sell it completely, and meeting the baby raptor especially was surreal — like standing next to a dinosaur straight out of the movie (or even the Jurassic period itself).
VelociCoaster (next time!)
Half of our family are big-time thrill seekers, half are not, so we decided to skip the line battle for this one. The Jurassic World VelociCoaster is a high-speed roller coaster that delivers an intense, immersive experience themed to the Jurassic World franchise.
But from the screams overhead and the coaster trains whizzing by, we know it’s firmly on our Islands of Adventure rides list for the next visit. Jurassic World VelociCoaster is considered one of the best roller coasters in the United States.
Hogsmeade
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
If you’re visiting during the day, make this your first stop. The line can be as epic as the ride itself.
Even at night, with a smaller crowd, it was still one of the longest waits.
Our kids decided it looked a bit too fast for them, so my husband stayed with them while I ran for the queue line.
My review? Absolutely worth it. From the lifelike creatures to the sensation of sitting on Hagrid’s motorbike, it felt straight out of the movies. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure features seven launches and a long layout with excellent theming. The ride takes guests through the Forbidden Forest, where you encounter magical creatures in an immersive outdoor setting.
Flight of the Hippogriff
This was hands-down our youngest’s favorite ride.
She rode it at least five times, and I’m convinced she would have happily gone fifty more.
It’s a short ride, doesn’t go too high, but it’s faster than it looks and gives a fun first drop. Perfect for kids (or adults) who want some thrill without the intensity.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
Walking through Hogwarts Castle itself is an attraction, with talking portraits, Dumbledore’s office, and the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom setting the stage.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is a state-of-the-art dark ride that uses special effects, animatronics, and immersive environments to transport riders into the world of Harry Potter. Once strapped in, your legs dangle as you twist and soar alongside Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
One minute riders are flying through a Quidditch match, the next they’re face-to-face with Dementors. And seriously, these animatronics get right up in your face. I’m not afraid to admit I pressed back in my seat a little bit as we flew up to one.
The mix of screens, special effects, and physical sets is so immersive that my heart was racing the whole time. Forbidden Journey delivers an experience on par with other top dark rides, such as The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, which is often regarded as one of the best non-Disney dark rides. It’s equal parts thrilling and a little scary, in the best way.
The Nighttime Magic at Hogsmeade
Don’t scurry so fast from one attraction to the next that you skip the extras when you’re walking around Hogsmeade.
The projection show on Hogwarts Castle, complete with the announcement of the Hogwarts Cup winner, is jaw-dropping, and the Hogwarts Choir performing with their frogs adds even more to the atmosphere. These are just some of the other experiences that make Hogsmeade special beyond the rides.
It’s these touches that make Hogsmeade feel like more than just rides; it feels like you’re truly in the Wizarding World.
Marvel Super Hero Island
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
We did one ride here, but it’s easily one of the most immersive rides in the park—a dark ride that uses special effects to fully immerse guests in Spider-Man’s world.
It’s a 3D adventure that takes you swinging across New York rooftops alongside Spider-Man himself.
The storytelling, combined with the motion effects, had us laughing and ducking as if we were actually there.
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man is often regarded as one of the best non-Disney dark rides.
And the drop near the end? Whew. All we can say is thank goodness Spider-Man is around to catch you.
This one’s a repeat-ride candidate for sure, and a must-have on any Islands of Adventure rides list.
Seuss Landing
Seuss Landing is home to several main attractions, including The Cat in the Hat, Caro-Seuss-el, and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Throughout the land, you’ll find whimsical Seuss characters and interactive play areas designed to engage children with hands-on fun.
After all the thrills, Seuss Landing was the perfect breather for our family. Surprisingly, this place ended up as one of the kids’ favorite parts of the park.
Caro-Seuss-el is a whimsical carousel themed around Dr. Seuss stories, where guests can ride imaginative creatures straight from the books. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is a family-friendly water ride featuring colorful fish vehicles—like red fish and two fish—that lift and circle guests while playful water elements add to the fun for all ages.
At night, the land glows neon, making it feel like you’ve stepped right into the pages of Dr. Seuss’s books.
The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride
This one’s a gentle ride that loops above Seuss Landing, offering some great views of the park.
It’s not fast or scary, unless you really dislike heights, but a wonderful way to take everything in from a new angle.
The Cat in the Hat
The Cat in the Hat is a slow-moving dark ride that tells the story of the classic Dr. Seuss book, immersing guests in the whimsical chaos caused by the Cat as you travel from room to room.
It’s slow, with some light spinning, and while it shows its age in spots, it still brought plenty of smiles, especially to our son, who’s always had the strongest love of these stories.
The charm outweighs the dated parts, and for families with kids under 10, it’s a must-do.
Lost Continent and Other Themed Areas
Tucked between the thrills of Jurassic Park and the magic of Hogsmeade, the Lost Continent is one of those hidden gems at Universal’s Islands of Adventure that often gets overlooked in the rush to the next big ride. This area is all about adventure and exploration, with winding pathways, ancient ruins, and a sense of mystery that sets it apart from the rest of the park.
The Lost Continent is split into two main sections: Sindbad’s Bazaar, which feels like you’ve stepped into an Arabian marketplace with its colorful shops and exotic details, and the Lost City, where Grecian and Atlantis-inspired architecture creates a backdrop for wandering and discovering. Consistently voted the best theme park restaurant, Mythos offers a menu that ranges from fresh seafood to hearty steaks, all served in a cavernous, otherworldly setting. It’s the perfect place to recharge before heading back out for more adventure.

Beyond the Lost Continent, Universal’s Islands of Adventure is packed with other themed lands that each bring something special to the table.
